Injection at 270–320 °C, mould at 80–120 °C. Pre-drying is essential: 4–6 hours at 120 °C. Highly susceptible to hydrolysis if damp. High viscosity requires high pressure. Low shrinkage (0.5–0.8 %). Take care with birefringence on optical components.
The PC is recyclable (code 7). Chemical depolymerisation allows for the recovery of BPA and diphenyl carbonate. Mechanical recycling is common in industry but degrades transparency and impact resistance after several cycles.
PC-FDA grades are approved for food contact. Beware of older grades that may contain BPA. Modern BPA-free grades comply with EU regulation 10/2011 for certain uses. Always check the specific grade.
Choose the right material for your application by comparing PC to alternatives on thermal, mechanical, chemical and cost criteria.
