Le PVC-U rigide résiste aux acides dilués et concentrés (sauf HNO3 fumant), aux bases et solutions salines. Sensible aux solvants aromatiques, THF, DMF et cétones. Le CPVC (version chlorée) offre une meilleure tenue thermique et chimique.
